This Christmas, visiting family members meant late-night trips to DFW Airport. In the dim light of night and road construction complicating already complex airport navigation, I strained to see the construction signs directing the maze of roads to Terminal D. The way was so confusing that my son’s Uber driver became hopelessly lost inside the airport, abandoning his charge.
Light would have greatly improved things. And in the festal season of Christmastide, we celebrate the coming of light in the darkness—the birth of One who enlightens the whole world, who brings the light of life. As Christ proclaimed, “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows Me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.”
The invitation of this season is to receive the light of life into our lives—to walk in Christ’s light, to bask in it. To let it change us. And to share it. This Christmastide and into the new year, how is Christ inviting you to embrace his light of hope and new life and let it shine? How is Christ inviting you to bear the good news of his birth, that others might find bright new beginnings in him?
This next year at the Abbey, we look forward to our own bright new beginning in Jesus—hosting more and varied retreats, spiritual companionship training, various listening groups, spiritual direction and Sunday morning mini retreats, that together we might walk in the light of Christ’s life. Read our vision here.
If the Abbey has been for you a place of walking in Christ’s light, consider partnering with this ministry through making a year-end donation. We have not yet reached our goal for 2026. To donate, see the Give page on our website.
Peace,
Rev. Markene Meyer
